The subject of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has received a lot of attention in recent years as research has shown that house dust and other indoor pollutants are a primary cause of allergies and respiratory related illness. Dust Mites, Cat Allergens (dander, hair and saliva), Mold Spores, etc. are the leading contributors to respiratory ailments.
Allergic reactions to dust mites include: eye irritation, running nose and sneezing, asthma, and various skin problems or dermatitis. Studies suggest that 70 % of all allergies in the U.S are caused by Dust Mites. Carpets, bedding, sofas, upholstered chairs, and house dust are the primary hosts of dust mites.
Carpet and area rugs, although they host these nasty microscopic critters, actually act as a “filter” that traps harmful indoor pollutants. In the early 1970′s, a Swedish study was conducted to determine whether the level of indoor air pollutants would decrease if all carpeting was removed from indoor environments. Over a 15 year study period, what the researchers found was that, without carpet, allergic reactions actually increased 300%! The reason, they discovered, was that the carpet and rugs acted as a filter to trap the harmful pollutants thus preventing them from circulating in the air.
Maintaining relative humidity below 50% and room temperatures under 77 degrees are very effective in reducing the reproduction of dust mites. Cleaning with water temperatures over 130 degrees is one of the most important things you can do to combat dust mites, as cold water will not kill them.
Studies show that one of the most effective ways to eliminate dust mites and many other indoor pollutants is to professionally clean your carpets, rugs and upholstery using the Hot Water Extraction method at least once a year…and more frequently for anyone that is more allergy prone. Make sure that any cleaning solutions used by your carpet cleaners are truly hypo-allergenic… you don’t want to eliminate one problem and replace it with another.
